Wash the seats with mild soap, warm water and a medium brush, then rinse with clear water and dry. If mildew stays, use a mildew cleaner your vinyl maker approves, or diluted bleach only if your vinyl line allows it, and rinse several times. Pink stains that come from inside the cushion do not wash out.
How to remove mildew from vinyl seats
Morbern says stains generally come off with warm soapy water and clear water rinses, with a medium bristle brush for textured vinyl. For tougher spots it lists approved cleaners, including X-14 Mildew Stain Remover, Boater's Edge Mildew Stain Remover and Starbrite Ultimate Vinyl Clean.
Rinse well after any cleaner and dry the seat. Mildew needs moisture, dirt and warmth, so a clean, dry seat is the prevention.
Best boat seat cleaners
The best boat seat cleaners are the ones your vinyl maker approves. Morbern lists X-14 Mildew Stain Remover, Boater's Edge Mildew Stain Remover and Starbrite Ultimate Vinyl Clean for tough spots, and warm soapy water for everything else.
Skip degreasers, Goo Gone, abrasive powders and undiluted bleach. The Nautolex care sheet says they strip the top coat that keeps marine vinyl soft.
Can I use bleach on boat seats
Only if your vinyl line allows it, and never undiluted. Morbern allows up to 10 percent bleach on its bleach cleanable lines. OMNOVA allows one part bleach to five parts water on Nautolex with PreFixx and warns that undiluted bleach can damage it.
Can I use a Magic Eraser on boat seats
No. Magic Eraser, degreasers, Goo Gone and undiluted bleach strip the factory top coat, as the Nautolex care sheet warns. The coat cannot be put back, and the vinyl then turns stiff and cracks. The same sheet also rules out abrasive powders, steel wool and pressure washers.
Why do boat seats turn pink
Pink stain is not surface mildew. Morbern and OMNOVA trace it to microbes growing in wet foam or plywood under the cover, whose by-product moves into the vinyl. Washing does not remove it, though it may fade a little in direct sun.
Prevent mildew in Florida
Florida humidity keeps seats damp, and mildew needs moisture, dirt and warmth. Rinse salt and sunscreen off after each trip, let the seats dry before they are covered, and keep air moving through the cabin.
Inside the cushion, quick-dry foam drains and dries where standard foam stays wet, which is what feeds pink stain.

Can you use Dawn to clean boat seats?
Yes, a few drops of a mild dish soap such as Dawn in warm water fits the mild soap and water that Morbern and Nautolex recommend. Rinse with clear water so no soap film is left.
